2004 Australian General Election

Australia held its parliamentary election on October 9, 2004. All 150 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election, and a party needed to win at least 76 seats to form a majority government.

Incumbent Prime Minister John Howard secured a fourth consecutive government, gaining five seats compared to the 2001 election. Australia's involvement in the Iraq War, as well as a severe drought affecting the country, divided the opposition and shored up popular support for the governing Liberal-National Coalition.
